Countertops are where a kitchen budget quietly splits in two. The material sets a price per square foot; the counter run you have turns that into a line item that can swing by thousands. Two independent 2026 cost compilations put installed countertop prices in the same territory. One lists granite at $40 to $100 per square foot installed and quartz at $50 to $120; the other, updated in March 2026, gives granite a wider $40 to $175 span and quartz $50 to $150 once exotic stone and premium brands are counted. Both agree on the floor — granite starts near $40 and quartz near $50 — and both find that at a like-for-like quality tier, quartz sits roughly $10 to $20 above granite.

Those are material-and-install figures, not a quote for your kitchen. To turn one into a number, measure your counter run in square feet and multiply. As an illustration only, a 40-square-foot run in mid-range quartz ($65–$90) works out around $2,600–$3,600 installed, and the same run in mid-range granite ($55–$75) around $2,200–$3,000. The gap between the two materials is real but small next to the gap between tiers.

Quartz vs granite: what the price actually buys

The two are close enough in price that cost rarely decides it alone. Granite is natural stone — every slab is unique, and it needs periodic sealing. Quartz is engineered, ground stone bound in resin, so it is non-porous, needs no sealing, and comes in consistent colours a natural slab cannot promise. When two quotes land within a few dollars per square foot, you are choosing maintenance and appearance, not spending.

Where price does decide it is at the extremes. The cheapest honest way into stone is budget granite; the ceiling is exotic granite, which the wider compilation shows running past $175 per square foot — above almost any quartz. So "granite is cheaper" holds only tier for tier. Pick the tier first, then the material.

Two "quartz" quotes can differ by half simply because one is level-one and the other a premium brand, or because one leaves out removal.
