Countertop Installation

Countertops are the step most likely to add a week nobody planned for, because they cannot be measured until the cabinets are physically installed.

Templating comes after cabinets, not before

A template is a precise record of the actual installed cabinet run, including whatever is out of square. It is taken on site once the boxes are set and levelled. Fabrication follows, then installation. Drawings cannot substitute for the template, which is why the countertop schedule is genuinely dependent on the cabinet schedule rather than merely sequenced after it.

The sink is the part that touches the rules

The slab itself is not permitted work anywhere in this metro. The sink cutout is where a countertop job can quietly become plumbing work: an undermount sink change, a different faucet configuration, or a disposal added where there was none. Independence states plainly that plumbing work requires a permit. Overland Park's exception list covers cabinets but explicitly not the plumbing modifications that accompany them.

Practical points worth raising

Ask who is responsible for disconnecting and reconnecting the plumbing, and whether that person holds the plumbing licence class. Ask whether the old countertop removal is included. And ask what happens if the template reveals the cabinet run is out of level — the answer should involve shimming the cabinets, not the countertop.
