Custom Cabinets & Installation

Cabinets are usually the largest single line item in a kitchen and almost always the longest lead time. That combination means they set the schedule for everything else, whether or not anyone plans it that way.

Stock, semi-custom and custom

Stock cabinets come in fixed sizes and ship quickly. Semi-custom starts from standard boxes with modifications. Custom is built to the room. The practical difference for scheduling is not quality but waiting: the further from stock you go, the more of your project timeline is spent with nothing happening on site.

Why measuring twice genuinely matters here

Custom cabinetry is made to dimensions taken before demolition, in a room whose walls may not be square and whose floor may not be level. A remeasure after demo, before the order is released, is normal practice and worth asking about — a cabinet run that does not fit is not a fixable problem in the way most site issues are.

What installation triggers

Installation alone is exempt from permitting in Overland Park, which publishes cabinet installation and replacement on its no-permit list. What tends to travel with a cabinet order is not exempt: new under-cabinet lighting circuits, a relocated sink base, an appliance that needs its own supply. Those are electrical and plumbing work, and in this metro they are separately licensed trades — Johnson County's remodeling licence classes explicitly exclude plumbing, electrical and HVAC.

Common questions

How far ahead should cabinets be ordered?
Ask the firm quoting you for the current lead time in writing and treat it as the start of your schedule rather than a detail. Everything after cabinets — countertops especially — waits on them.
Do I need a separate electrician?
If the work adds or moves circuits, yes — or a firm that holds the electrical licence class as well. In Johnson County the remodeling licence does not cover electrical work.
